El Camino Hospital Board Member

The three most valuable capabilities that I bring to bear as a member of the El Camino Hospital Board were developed diligently over 25 years working in start-ups and Fortune 50 companies:
I am a very strategic thinker, who also understands the importance of tactical excellence to meet an organization’s goals
Having led teams in functional disciplines that range from customer support, to operations, to sales to marketing, to engineering I understand how the pieces fit together in a complex operating environment
I have learned how to build and develop great teams and individuals.
The emotional commitment I bring to this community institution is rooted in my having literally grown up in and around the hospital. I remember getting an early tetanus shot after stepping on a nail at the construction site that was to be my father’s medical office across the street from El Camino Hospital. Getting my tonsils out was less painful not so much for the plentiful ice cream but for having my father and our family friends constantly stopping by my hospital bed.
My actions as a member of this publicly supported, District Hospital Board include my commitment to Community Health care. In just my second month as a board member the board accepted my recommendation to expand its 7 core Strategic Goals to ad an 8th: Community Involvement. “ In the budget year beginning July 1, 2009 we have committed a 300% increase to $5 million to support Community Benefit Programs.
I am also an effective steward of the hospital’s resources. Sitting on the Hospital’s internal IT board (ISSC) I provided direct and specific recommendations on processes that needed to be strengthened following the extremely difficult and painful IT system implementation known as ECHO 4.0. I have asked for explicit financial goals when appropriate for expensive new devices and software applications and ensure that we schedule future reviews of the projects to ensure that the projected goals are met. As we have expanded our new service offerings the hospital has adopted more rigorous business plan analysis at my urging as we consider investing millions of dollars to improve the quality of care in the district.
